Synopsis

In 1948, the city of Aguascalientes experienced one of the most significant social mobilizations of the 20th century. That year, various civil society groups initiated a protest movement against the tax measures imposed by the local government. The cause of the problem was the enactment of a new property tax law in the first months of 1948, a provision that proposed to increase taxes, a mandate that would directly affect workers, settlers, and even the middle and upper classes of the state.
The news generated widespread discontent that led to protests and public demonstrations, the closure of businesses, and hunger strikes by the dissenters; a shock to public order that alerted the army, the local government, the Ministry of the Interior, and the Presidency of the Republic itself. It is very likely that the fight against the property tax revealed the need to rewrite the pact that existed between the government and civil society. To design direct answers to the hypotheses raised in this book, it is necessary to know in detail what happened before, during, and after the movement, which is precisely the purpose of this work.
