Synopsis

The book presented by Dr. Jesús Armando López Velarde Campa, entitled Fiction of Female Empowerment, is an important investigation, which shows, through the analysis of various indicators, that equality between men and women is far from being achieved in our country. Female empowerment is an important process that involves strengthening the autonomy, confidence and capacity of women to make decisions and have a positive impact on their lives and on society in general, which, although it has undergone constant evolution in recent decades, there are still persistent challenges that hinder the full empowerment of women. Gender violence, the wage gap, discrimination and gender stereotypes are persistent problems in Mexican society. In addition, women face additional obstacles due to their socioeconomic status, ethnic origin, sexual orientation and geographic location.

Through the analysis of the 103 indicators and the various national and international methodologies that Dr. López Campa presents, we find those defined by the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women of 1979, the National Program for Equal Opportunities and Non-Discrimination against Women, the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations (UN), as well as the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC).

In each of the nine chapters, the information that verifies the hypothesis of the work is shown, with data obtained from various institutions such as the National Council for the Evaluation of Social Development Policy (CONEVAL), the National Electoral Institute (INE), the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), the Government of Mexico, the National Institute for Women (INMUJERES), the World Bank, the United Nations Population Fund and the Worldmeter analyzing the indicators related to topics such as Indigenous Population, Home, Education, Health, Work and Economy, Political Participation, Access to ICTs, Financial Products and Services, Violence against women and the situation of women in the world, to conclude that discrimination against women is still a reality in our country, with the specific proposal to achieve that material equality that is a commitment of all, government and society, to lay the foundations that allow us to talk about female empowerment.
